The gates of Santiago
Did you know that the historic center of Santiago de Compostela was surrounded for years by a large wall of almost two kilometers? And that possibly in your day-to-day life you pass through one of the gates of the wall that were strategic in the Middle Ages? Little is known about the original construction of the wall, although the Calixtine Codex did refer to the seven main gates, which served as communication between the city and the countryside. It was Porta Faxeira, Porta da Mámoa, Porta do Camiño, Porta da Pena, Porta de San Francisco, Mazarelos and Porta da Trinidade.
Last Monday, February 12, the 5th and 6th grade students walked through the old town of our city, going through the places where the 7 gates used to close Santiago in the Middle Ages stood.
